As a Google Workspace Administrator, you have the ability to route emails in multiple ways. The two most popular real-time scenarios are split delivery and dual delivery.
In this exercise, you’ll practice configuring split and dual delivery.
You've received an email from Alex B. Let's see how you can help.
Part 1: Add mail server for Gmail email routing
Before you create a routing setting you must add the details of your legacy server (the third-party provider) to the Admin console. This is done by adding a new host (also known as a route).
Step 1
If you are not already signed in, sign in to your domain as the Administrator at admin.google.com.
Step 2
From the main menu, navigate to Apps, select Google Workspace, and click Gmail.
Step 3
Click Hosts.
Step 4
Click ADD ROUTE.
Step 5
Enter Legacy Mail Platform in the Name field.
This is where you enter the legacy mail server details. You must specify a public hostname or IP address. For more complex environments, you can also add a primary and secondary configuration, each of which can consist of multiple mail servers. To keep things simple, let's assume you only have one mail server.
Step 6
In the Specify email server section, enter the hostname my.legacyserver.com. (This is just a test name and doesn't actually exist).
Step 7
For the purposes of this exercise, enter 25 as the port number.
Step 8
Click SAVE.

Both split delivery and dual delivery require proper DNS management with accurate MX records.
Monitor email flow during and after configuration to ensure correct routing.
