Local data storage is a Google Workspace feature that enables you to export your organization's Workspace data into your own Google Cloud Storage (GCS) bucket. The location of your bucket determines the location in which your data is stored. The feature gives you control over your data's location and who can access it, addressing data sovereignty concerns.
When you use local data storage, exports include data only from users with the Assured Controls add-on license assigned, which is available as a paid add-on for Enterprise Plus users. For a comparison of data region features across Google Workspace editions, please refer to the help center article titled “Compare data region features across Google Workspace editions.”
Industries and regions have varying compliance rules for storing data. Google Workspace accommodates several different compliance standards and certifications. For a full list of Google’s compliance offerings, please refer to the page on the Google Cloud website titled “Compliance offerings.”
With data regions, you can choose to store your covered data in a specific geographic location (the United States or Europe). Data regions cover data at rest (including backups) and data processing for customer-supplied data in several Google Workspace core services.
